The objective of this study was to investigate the form of identification of outpatients, which willbe submitted to cardiac catheterization procedure in a public institution specialized in cardiology ofhigh complexity of SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde), located in Rio de Janeiro, and in which 89 accreditation process was implemented. Identify Patients Correctly is the first of International Patient Safety Goals defined by the World Health Organization and included in Joint Commission International Accreditation Standards for hospitals (third edition, 2007). The methodology adopted was a qualitative approach using a questionnaire applied to the nurses that develops the care of patients in this service, to know the form of identification used in thecurrent situation and how the situation would be desirable. It was found that there is no standardization of identification of patients in this service, however they value this goal of safety, and the identification is done in a individualized form. It was then suggested the creation of an institutional protocol aimed at improvement of practice and quality of care.
