Programa Cuidado Limpo é Cuidado Seguro da OMS: teste nos serviços de saúde para aumentar a sustentabilidade e disseminar melhorias ligadas à higiene das mãos

A Aliança Mundial para a Segurança do Paciente (World Alliance for Patient Safety) é um programa em evolução da OMS estabelecido para aumentar a proeminência das questões de segurança do paciente dentro da agenda global da saúde. A decisão, tomada em 2004, de concentrar os esforços e a atenção do Primeiro Desafio Global de Segurança do Paciente (First Global Patient Safety Challenge) no problema das infecções associadas ao cuidado de saúde (IACS) reflete o fato de que as IACS ainda são um importante risco à saúde do paciente e continuam a trazer danos aos pacientes no século XXI. Boa parte destes danos é evitável com a aplicação mais adequada de medidas já existentes, entre elas a implementação universal de métodos de melhoria da higiene das mãos. As ações de melhoria da higiene das mãos se encontram, portanto, no âmago do Primeiro Desafio, e as estratégias de implementação da OMS, desenvolvidas em conjunto com as Diretrizes da OMS sobre Higiene das Mãos no Cuidado de Saúde - Esboço Avançado (WHO Guidelines for Hand Hygiene in Health Care - Advanced Draft), estão sendo submetidas a testes de campo, com conclusão prevista para o final de 2008. Posteriormente, a OMS irá publicar diretrizes revistas e atualizadas e um conjunto de ferramentas de implementação. É importante notar que o Primeiro Desafio Global de Segurança do Paciente mobilizou, num breve espaço de tempo, um número sem precedentes de países comprometidos a realizar ações contra as IACS.

The World Alliance for Patient Safety is an evolving programme of the WHO, established to raise the profile of patient safety within the global health care agenda. The decision taken in 2004 to focus the effort and attention of the First Global Patient Safety Challenge on the problem of health care-associated infection (HAI) is testimony to the fact that HAI is a significant patient safety hazard and continues to harm patients in the 21st century. Much of this harm is avoidable through better application of measures which already exist including universal implementation of hand hygiene improvement methods. Action on hand hygiene improvement is therefore at the core of the First Challenge, and field testing of the WHO implementation strategies developed in conjunction with the WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care (Advanced Draft) is on track to complete by the end of 2008. Following this, a revised and updated guideline and suite of implementation tools will be published by the WHO. It is important to note that the First Global Patient Safety Challenge has mobilized an unprecedented number of countries over a short timeframe to commit to take action on HAI.
